Verify layers, lineweights, colors, fonts, and dimensions

Compare visible and plotted layers with the source. Layers can be off, frozen, viewport-frozen, or marked not to plot. Understand 3D, custom objects, and precision limits

A page PDF is not a complete 3D model. Shaded or rendered viewports may become raster images, and layers, object properties, coordinates, constraints, and model intelligence are reduced or lost. Custom objects created by Civil 3D, Architecture, plant, electrical, GIS, or third-party applications may appear as proxy graphics only when the source saved them. Ask the author to export a controlled 2D layout or use the appropriate product when those objects carry essential information.

Autodesk also documents that PDF uses lower numerical precision than DWG, so large geolocated coordinates, tiny objects beside very large geometry, tangent locations, and arc endpoints can experience rounding. This usually does not matter for ordinary viewing, but it matters if someone tries to recover geometry or take measurements from the PDF. Keep DWG as the technical source. Use the PDF for communication, markup, approvals, and printing within its stated purpose, not as a lossless CAD interchange file.

Protect project and client information

Drawings can reveal client names, site addresses, floor plans, utilities, security systems, coordinates, proprietary details, revision history, and consultant information. Confirm that an online service is approved for the project's data classification and contracts. Remove unused confidential layouts and xrefs only from a controlled delivery copy. Do not upload critical infrastructure, defense, security, regulated, or legally privileged drawings to an unapproved converter.

Use a trusted device and network, verify the domain, and keep downloads in the project folder rather than a shared general Downloads directory. Print at the intended size or use an approved digital measurement check only when the plot process was controlled.

Name the file with project, drawing number, revision, and status according to the team's convention. Keep the DWG package and the exact issued PDF together with the transmittal or approval record. If the drawing changes, regenerate from the revised CAD source rather than marking up an obsolete PDF and treating it as authoritative.
